DOWNTOWN [Mears Park, Lower Town, Rice Park]

St. Paul is widely known for its colorful past as a bootlegger and gangster safe-haven and this character prevails throughout the city today with its eclectic assortment of entertainment options, pubs, performing arts venues and museums. It’s a quiet, but vibrant downtown – one that hosts several large corporations such as Ecolab, Lawson, Travelers, Cray, Gander Mountain, Green Tree Financial, Wells Fargo and Genesis 10. Performing arts, museums and sports options are plentiful and the new light-rail Green Line can carry you west, to downtown Minneapolis for even more fun.

Housing stock is somewhat limited, and units tend to be on the small side, but in downtown you’ll find a mix of newer construction condos, lofts and townhouses or converted industrial and train station lofts too!

Home to St. Catherine University, Highland Park National Golf Course and Circus Juventas – a unique performing arts circus for youth. Future development of the now defunct Ford Motor plant parcel is being planned which will include a variety of housing options.

MACALESTER GROVELAND

Filled with eclectic shops and restaurants on Grand Avenue, as well as being bordered by the Mississippi River and Recreation Area, a public park with miles of walking and biking paths along the river banks, this western St. Paul neighborhood is the definition of city meets country. Extending from the Mississippi River to the Summit Avenue Historic district, with mansions from the late 1890’s, this neighborhood is rich with history. Originally part of Fort Snelling, in 1850’s it branched off on its’ own. The Grand Old Days parade, one of the oldest and largest city festivals in the nation, takes place primarily in this neighborhood. Home to Macalester College and the University of St. Thomas, the influence of academia can be felt throughout this diverse neighborhood, with many creative and cultural opportunities for all residents. House options are pricey and in tight supply – from rentals, to condos to single family homes – demand is high due to location and walkability. Restaurants, retail and coffee shops can be found on just about every major corner which makes this among one of the favorite neighborhoods in the entire metro.
