MINNEAPOLIS: UNIVERSITY NEIGHBORHOODS

NICOLLET ISLAND/EAST BANK:

This cultural hotspot, located along the Mississippi River, is a favorite among Twin Citians because of its quaint, small-town vibe. The area is often referred to as “Nordeast”, paying homage to its deep northern- and eastern-European roots. Nye’s Polonaise Room and Kramarczuk’s are synonymous with the neighborhood, where you can eat the best pierogies around town and learn to polka. Located just across the Hennepin Avenue Bridge from downtown, it’s near the riverfront, biking trails, walking paths, Metro Transit, and the University of Minnesota. It even has its very own island. Northern Spark, an annual all-night arts festival that lights up the city with its alternative arts displays attracts thousands. It’s no wonder this neighborhood is considered one of the trendiest and most exciting places to call home.

Located just east of the Mississippi River and south of East Hennepin Avenue, the area is often referred to as “Southeast” Minneapolis. Marcy-Holmes is a gateway to the heart of the University of Minnesota and Dinkytown, a hip area with eclectic dining  - be sure to grab a meal at the Loring Pasta Bar and stay after for salsa dancing lessons - and student housing. Enjoy the award-winning community gardens and art galleries. It’s only a 15-minute walk to downtown and a stone’s throw away from the Mississippi River and its biking and walking trails.

Located between the University of Minnesota and St. Paul, residents enjoy the winding, tree-lined streets where no two houses are alike. Some consider this neighborhood Minneapolis’ best-kept secret. The iconic Witch’s Hat, a water tower that was constructed in 1913, is the neighborhood’s landmark and can be seen from I-94. Residents of Prospect Park are diverse, individualistic, community-minded, and politically active. It’s centrally-located between both downtowns (Minneapolis and St. Paul) - about 10 minutes by car and 20 minutes by bus. The area is within walking distance to dining and shopping on nearby University Avenue - be sure to grab a mouth-watering red velvet cupcake from locals’ favorite bakery, aptly named Cupcake. CEDAR-RIVERSIDE:

More widely known as the West Bank (with the University of Minnesota’s performance, visual arts and law school centers located on the west bank of the Mississippi River), this neighborhood is a global village in its own right, with over 45% of its residents hailing from another country. Ethnic grocery stores, restaurants, and international malls can be found in this community. Perhaps equally as diverse is Cedar-Riverside’s housing stock: the neighborhood has plenty of high-rise condos, apartments, and single-family dwellings to select from. The area is within 5 minutes of downtown Minneapolis and is easily accessible to nearby trails and biking paths along the river. The Hiawatha Light Rail line also bisects the area.
