MINNEAPOLIS: LAKE CALHOUN NEIGHBORHOODS

WEST CALHOUN:

Before the area was settled by Europeans, it was populated by the Dakota. The first recorded village on the lake was established with the help of Cloudman, a Dakota leader. Today, this bustling neighborhood lies adjacent to Lake Calhoun, the most popular lake among the Chain of Lakes, and is home to a number of high-rises and condos. The Midtown Greenway is close for those who wish to commute to their downtown office on their bike, as is Cedar Lake. The neighborhood’s iconic landmark is the Calhoun Beach Club (est. 1928), a state-of-of-art fitness center that also offers fine dining and hotel accommodations, all with sweeping vistas of Lake Calhoun. Minneapolis’ oldest country club, the Minikahda Club (est. 1898), is also located in this area - the private club boasts an 18-hole golf course. Be sure to get your pizza fix at Punch Pizza. It specializes in Neapolitan-style pizza and is a real hit with the kids, too! For those with a more sophisticated palate, check out Mill Valley Kitchen (just a short drive down Excelsior Blvd), featuring clean, healthy California-inspired cuisine.

CEDAR-ISLES-DEAN:

Located on the western edge of Minneapolis, this affluent neighborhood earned its moniker from Cedar Lake, Lake of the Isles, and Dean Parkway. What makes this neighborhood so wonderful is that it’s where lakes (Isles and Cedar) and trails (Kenilworth and the Greenway) all intersect - it’s a paradise for runners, bikers, and pedestrians alike. The trails, which go all the way to downtown Minneapolis and beyond, provide a scenic shaded byway in the summer months and its canopy of leaves are majestic reds and burnt oranges in the autumn. The area is serviced by various bus routes and eventually light rail (LRT). Yum! is a popular hangout spot, where everything is prepared from scratch - from its challah to its famous mac & cheese to its decadent desserts - it’s sure to please even the fussiest of eaters!

ECCO:

Enjoy the best of both worlds, as this neighborhood is perfectly nestled between Lake Calhoun, extending into Uptown and is easily accessible to various bus routes along Hennepin Avenue. The housing mix includes apartment buildings, duplexes, and single-family homes that were built mostly around the turn of the 20th century. Take a walk around the lake and enjoy dinner at one of the area’s plethora of fabulous dining options. Millennials prefer Chino Latino (arguably Minneapolis’ hippest bar/restaurant - think Mexican-Asian-fusion); for those with a more distinguished palate, another neighborhood favorite is Lucia’s. This neighborhood institution has been offering fresh, seasonal cuisine and fine wines for nearly 30 years. Didn’t have time to drop Fido off at home after your walk? No problem! Lucia’s is dog- friendly! Have your pooch “sit” at the Dog Bar! From trendy shops, to the newly-renovated, state-of-the-art Walker Library, to yoga studios, to grocery stores, this area is a real favorite for folks on the “go.”

CARAG:

This community-minded neighborhood, near Lake Calhoun and Uptown, boasts its very own Livability and Engagement Committee, with fun, engaging activities for residents from its annual neighborhood super garage sale, to car washes, to chili fests, to plant swaps, to Earth Day clean up. The majority of homes were built prior to 1920 in a variety of housing styles including Foursquares, Arts and Crafts, and other period-revival styles. The area also has small and large apartment buildings. Nearby Bryant Park has its own outdoor concert series during the summer months, a playground, wading pool, and hockey rink. For the more adventurous types, try the baked potato pizza at Pizza Luce.
